In /etc/X11 you will find a file named XF86Config. There should be a
Section "Screen" containing a Subsection "Display". In that subsection
there is a Modes line. Move whatever you want to the front of that
list, and X should come up in the specified mode. Assuming there is
a valid mode definition in the file.
