Don't know anything about AltiVec - just as well really, I'd only tinker
with it ;-)

I have a 9600 with a Powerlogix G3/400 card in it and that works fine BUT
there was an option on the Powerlogix control panel to pass parameters to
the kernel - do you have a similar setting for your NewerTech card?

The kernel panic could be the result of something else entirely - best to
start with a minimal kernel config and work up to something more complex.
