You are looking for a package called pmud - this monitors the battery,
and enables sleep when the lid is closed.
Apparently though there are issues with sleeping on Powerbooks beyond a
certain date (I think it's the G4's, and possibly some of the very
recent G3's). I have a 1999 Powerbook G3, and sleep works fine.
