Subject: kernel builds and gcc 2.7.2.x

I was reading some notes on compiling kernels and it says that
using gcc 2.7.2.x is preferred because it's a compiler know to
produce correct code.
So I got gcc 2.7.2.3 and tried building it, but, apparantly,
that version of gcc didn't support the Mac platform since it
complains about an unknown machine during a configure.
So what version of gcc do people who regularly build kernels for
the Mac use?
