If you would like the RPM kernel upgrades to work without messing with the HFS
partition you can change the yaboot.conf to boot the kernel from the ext2
filesystem

Something like:

default = linux
image = ultra0:7,boot/vmlinux
        label = linux
        root=/dev/hda7

",boot/vmlinux" is the key.
