building a new kernel

Alright, I give up. I'm trying to do a simple kernel upgrade, and anytime I
boot with my kernel image, my G4 hangs at "Do-QUIESCE Finished". Is there
some sort of kernel patch you need to boot with yaboot on a PowerPC?

I'm on a NewWorld G4, using yaboot (not sure what version -- 0.5 maybe?),
and the kernel in question is 2.2.16. I've tried lots of combinations of
different kernel options (usually as minimalist as I can get), but booting
only continues past the QUIESCE stage with the images supplied with
YellowDog, LinuxPPC, and SuSE.

In the case of YellowDog, my root is hd:13, so I've copied
/usr/src/linux/vmlinux to /vmlinux and /usr/src/linux/System.map to
/boot/System.map, then my yaboot params are image=hd:13,\vmlinux and
root=/dev/hda13 (which didn't change).

Thanks for any assistance,
Stymied
