Yellow Dog installs very secure.
They are wise enough to use ProFTPD opposed to WU (not that ProFTPD
hasn't had its share... but not like WU)

With yup, upgrading a system is very easy. I wouldn't recommend using
yup on a production server, though (simply because its better to
manually install anything in that scenario. Less things get broken
that can't be quickly fixed)

As good as any Linux/UNIX

Yellow Dog Linux is an excellent choice.

For Database, I would recommend MySQL. You can run MySQL and php-4
very nicely on YDL.

Sorry if this sounds a little like spam...

I would reccomend the product the company I work for puts out, Abria
SQL Standard. http://www.abriasoft.com/

It installs MySQL-3.22.32 (or 3.23.21-beta if you are so inclined),
php-3.0.16 or 4.0.1pl2 (go with 4.0.1pl2- its FAST), Apache if need
be, documentation, Perl 5.6 with the Perl DBI, the works.

While we are marketing it for the database- our php-4.0.1pl2 is
really well done- it includes php support for mysql, posgres, imap,
ldap, gd as different modules so that you don't have to use what you
don't need.

Our product also comes with a O'Reilly book. It will be shipping in
very early September.

If you don't know php- the BEST book for learning it in my opinion is
PHP Essentials by Julie Meloni. You can get it on amazon.

If you want to see our product in action-

It's running on my box (just installed it today)

I love EIMS. I use EIMS 2.2.2 on an SE/30. Very solid product. I use
it for an smtp (I don't pop it ever).

Linux can handle much more...
