This problem might be related to virtual memory.
Only real difference between YDL and the other Linux distros is the
different Linux kernel.

All the applications listed in the previous article are very slow all
round, execute simple option or drag and drop or writing is very slow
(much slower than Os X 10.0.1).

I tried the SuSE 7.1 PPC (KDE 2.0.1) one and she's fast as LinuxPPC (KDE
2.1.1); but YDL 2.0 (KDE 2.1-10) is terribly slower compare to others
distros.
