You are correct, sir. You could also be superuser, and type:

cd /
/sbin/yup update

The error you got usually just means the ydl server is busy or down
(-at least, that's my impression). I just kept trying repeatedly,
immediately after receiving the "Error" prompts, and finally got
through. Don't walk away if yup starts downloading files, because it
will eventually query you (Y/N) for permission to go ahead with its
list of updates.
