Screen Res

Ok, basic linux question:

I've got 2.0 finally installed and I've told it to do 1024 x 768 with
thousands of colors. The screen flickers really bad (like it's
refresh is at 50 hz) and if I go to 800 x 600 or 640 x 480, it does
the virtual screen thing.

I specified the monitor (NEC 5FGe) and selected only the 1024, 800,
and 640 resolutions to be used.

Hitting Control-Alt to cycle through the screens as the default is 640 x 480.

What I would like to know, is how I can force this thing to go to
1024 x 768, thousands of colors and 72 Hz refresh.

Why hasn't someone written a decent GUI for setting screen
resolutions...or has someone? Please point me in the right
direction. I'm using CLI for now.
