"switchdesk", if run from the command line in a terminal window,
with X running, will bring up a dialog box that allows you to select
which desktop you want of those you have installed. I don't know if
it can be run without X running - I've never tried it.
I've stuck with Gnome, just because I've acquired a limited
familiarity with its workings while using Redhat for PC.
