1. Where should "echo 0 > /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/check_media" be added to be
automatically executed on reboot?

2. Kernel-2.4.8 sound works to some extent, e.g. xmms and system bell works.
However, logging into kde, when the panel loads it sounds like a vacuum
cleaner instead of the "serenade" I hear with kernel-2.4.4c. Strangely,
kernel 2.4.4a had the same problem, but whatever was wrong was fixed in
2.4.4c. Any ideas what is going on or how it is fixed?
