I had a similar problem combiling bibview (an X-based bibtex database
manager). My solution
was to (don't shoot) comment out one of the definitions of
OptimizedCDebugFlags, logged in as root, and that package compiled. I think
I did something like:

#ifndef OptimizedCDebugFlags
#define OptimizedCDebugFlags [blah blah blah]
#endif
