Ahh... the joys of non-fully supported h/w :)

To the point, I've a brand-spanking new Dual G4 (the 450 species)
with an Adaptec 29160N SCSI card and 512M of RAM (all else
pretty much on spec). Trouble is, the CS 1.2.1 boot CD refuses to
finish the boot sequence, bailing out with a kernel panic not long
after the USB and SCSI setups.

The error (somewhat edited, full backtrace available on request):
 Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address
   00000042 (error 40000000)
 TASK = c01d4270[0] 'swapper' nn->pgd c01d2000 Last syscall: 112
 Kernel panic: kernel access of bad area pc c0129a14 lr c013156c address
   42 tsk swapper/0

I'm using the simple method of booting from the CD-ROM (via 'c'
keyboard selection). The install CD-ROM is known good, since it
works dandy on a PB G3 ('99).

Any hints or ideas?
