I had this problem with my iMac rev B.
Then I read somewhere (can't find it again) a hint to the effect that it
could be caused by a lack of RAM.
At that time, the RAM on my machine was 32 MB (native) + 32 MB (added) = 64
MB. So I replaced the 32 MB add-on by 128 MB, bringing the total to 160 MB.
Now everything is all right.
