What does the file /etc/sysconfig/network look like? I am betting that your
line GATEWAYDEV = eth0. For ppp stuff, I found that setting GATEWAYDEV =
(blank, remove the eth0) fixed things. I remember getting the same error in
my message logs about not finding ppp0. Initially what I did was to do
/sbin/ifup ppp0 and then /sbin/ifdown ppp0. Then I could dial in and the
problems would go away. The /sbin/ifup ppp0 was clearing out the default
gateway and then my dialup procedure would work. However, I discovered that
by eliminating eth0 as the GATEWAYDEV, then probing for module ppp0 would
work and the default gatewaydev would then become ppp0 and I could see the
rest of the world.
