Thanks for the reply.

I've managed to fix it, with ybin. It seems I was using the old
bootstrap method with the HFS partition. Once I'd removed that and added
the special Apple-bootstrap type (and renumbered the partitions so the
bootstrap was #2), it all came together.

A couple of hairy bootups with my distro's CD in between partitioning as
pdisk et al failed to re-read the table, but otherwise it went well.

Now to claim back that 32Mb of HFS (old bootstrap) :) ...
