You should at least have a basic core installation of the Mac OS on one
partition, just to be safe. You might need to boot into it. I am also a
newbie with a couple of 7200/120's. I installed a 20 meg OS 9.1.

What do you plan to use the server as? I can help you on setting up
telnet, ftp, and Apache httpd (webserver) servers.
