Oops! There was one more step that I missed in my earlier post. You need to
edit /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XftConfig and add:

dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"

at the top of the file.

Restart the font server and X server. You should be all set after that.
