Just format the drive any which way; I suggest choosing 1 partition type
HFS standard, just to make sure. When you get to the Linux partitioner,
you can delete all the partitions ADS created except partition hdb1 (or
so I'm told. I have always had MacOS installed so in that case leave all
the MacOS partitions except the HFS ones you don't intend to use in
MacOS. It varies depending on what version of HD Setup you use, but
typically the first 6 to 8 are part of the drive's setup to work in
MacOS). This will give you a partition map like:

Linux Only:
hdb1 whatever it says
hdb2 Free Space

MacOS + Linux
hda1 to hda 6 (for example)
hda7 HFS
hda8 unallocated (another way of saying free space)

Then format hdb2 as Linux (ext_2) and mount it with mountpoint /home
