Subject: exit shell; logout? shutdown?

sorry for this one, after a session to leave the shell. i enter: exit,
which returns me to the login prompt. How do i then shutdown my box
safely with a command (i.e like in macos: shutdown) Also what's the best
manual to get for YDL, i haven't seen a book, specifically for Linux on
ppc, like the multipul "bible" type books for "red hat" and other intel
based linux dist's. thanks
