Error compiling kernel 2.4.1

Subject: Error compiling kernel 2.4.1

I've made several tries to change my .config, but I always get the following
error:

pmac_pci.c:550: in function `pmac_pci_enable_device_hook´
pmac_pci.c:550: `PCI_DEVICE_ID_APPLE_KL_USB´ undeclared
......
make[1]: *** [pmac_pci.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/ppc/kernel´

Any suggestions?
BTW, reading Documentation/Changes I found that I should upgrade some
software, for example util-linux, modutils, ppp, ecc.... But I do not
understand if I have to upgrade them before or after compiling the kernel.

 Bye.
