        My nameservers aren't down very often. Usually when my DSL is
        down, it's down for other reasons (such as my ISP's router
        being down). Once that's gone, the rest is irrelevant.

        I run sendmail behind my firewall, i.e., port 25 is closed from
        the outside. I run fetchmail to get my mail and use sendmail
        for local delivery... as well as sending mail outbound.
