Has anyone had any luck getting mysql running?

I've installed the mysql-3.23.32-1.7a.ppc.rpm from the my YDL cd, run
safe_mysqld and then the server stops. This is the log entry:

020202 07:45:59 mysqld started
020202 07:45:59 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist
020202 07:45:59 mysqld ended

I can't find any documentation on this and I know mysql is set to run
on localhost by default.

I'm running YDL 2.1 with kernal 2.4.17 on a TI PowerBook 667mhz.
