configure sound?

Does anyone have sound conifgured, i though it was done in install but i'm
not receiving any (sound,... actually i am without running x), in fact i
recieve an error from KDE Media player - short description: the application
noatun crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
-An application mostly recieves the SIGSEGV signal due to a bug in tha
application. the app,..

This is the main error:
Error: Sound server fatal error:
error while initializing the sound driver: Can't set playback format (_format
= 17, asked driver to give 16, got 32)
this just seems like sound just isn't configured properly, right?

what is the current driver, '/usr/src/linux-2.4.10/drivers/sound/dmasound'?
how should i proceed?
