Yes, it is possible to force quit, and yes, it does involve the console.
Generally, though, getting to the console is the problem. However, if you
can get there, then running killall -9 "nameofapplication" should get rid of
your problem ... although you may have to wait for 30 seconds or so before
the app finally dies.
