I managed to fix the problem:

I pulled the YDL-2.0 cd prior to boot - the text-based installer loaded
instead of the graphical one. I'll remember your tip in the future though.
Unfortunately, though, the installer was still bombing while trying to
format the disk.

I removed the current hda device (a scsi zip100 drive), re-ran the installer
(with the hard drive in the hda position rather than hdb) and it worked
perfectly. Cool.
