I personally run exim as my mailserver, nice easy config, easy to build,
not a resource hog, not sure how well it would stack up against sendmail or
qmail in a mission-critical capacity, but it works well for my meager needs.

Con's:
- Bad track record with security (holes, slack defaults)
- Damn near incomprehensible configuration syntax
- Obfuscated code base
- Many critics claim it doesn't scale too well and is hard to manage
- Beefy in terms of processor requirements
Pro's:
- Almost everything works with it.
- Supported by your vendor.
- Lots of brainshare out there about it
- Lots of books, HOWTO's, Doc's
- Can do somethings other MTA's just plain can't
- Can scale up well.
