Subject: changing keyboard

i have to change the keyboard mapping to a french one. That is working
under the console not under X, because each time a change XF86Config-4 to
the needed (french) values, after a restart, those older values are
coming back. I suspect this is due to something like Xautoconfig.
How could i overcome this phenomenom ?
