X allows you to grow your desktop size to a specified resolution that may
be larger than what your display hardware can handle. It's called the
Virtual Desktop. This create a 1024x768 desktop and sets your monitor to
800x600 which acts like a porthole to your desktop. Moving the mouse
around moves the porthole across your desktop.

Many (if not all) people fine this really annoting. I personally like
when I need to see small detail or small text, as I can just change
resolutions with Ctrl-Alt+Keypad+ and things soom in / out as needed.
