Cheap XTerm Option and a MOL question

In a fit of sleep-deprived inspiration...

Roommate stumbled upon a decent and free mac-side xterm. Needs a 68K
or PPC macos machine, with a telnet client.

http://www.microimages.com/freestuf/mix/macindex.htm
These guys have a passable remote xserver for the MacOS, called MIX

took us 3 hours to get it right (2 of which were spent figuring out
BASH uses export, not setenv .... ), but we were able to get KDE
(mostly) functional... no K-menu nor kpanel. Apps run nicely, though.
Our startup shell script is as follows:

>#!/bin/bash
>export DISPLAY=24.237.1.117
>xterm &
>kde &

the question here is:
1) have I missed something? (which prevents me from getting the kpanel dock)
2) how do I set the script to find the ip from which one has telneted in?

On the other problem:

running vmlinux-2.2.17pre20-ben3, and most recent (0.9.53) on the
iMac DVSE 500, with stripped nw rom, get to grey mac-boot screen, but
no further. VMode set to match X settings. No good error messages,
either. Mac Mouse Cursor appears, but is non-functional; no
disk-search, either. just sits. if in full-screen mode, can only
cmd-ctrl-del to crash X. Any ideas?
