I'm trying to compile the 2.4.0 version of the kernel (from kernel.org) and
am getting this error:

/usr/src/linux/include/asm/mmu.h: Assembler messages:
/usr/src/linux/include/asm/mmu.h:10: Error: Unrecognized opcode: `typedef'
make[1]: *** [head.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4/arch/ppc/kernel'
make: *** [_dir_arch/ppc/kernel] Error 2

If recall correctly from my C and C++ courses typedef is both a C and C++
keyword. If that is indeed correct I can only deduce that I've managed to
screw up my gcc or glibc somehow? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
