Subject: Turn off PowerBook speakers?

I'm using YDL on a Lombard PowerBook and almost all is well. One of the
persnickety problems I'm having is that I'd like to turn off sound from
the speakers when I'm using headphones (listening to MP3s etc.). MacOS
does this automatically when you plug in the headphones, but Linux plays
sound through both the headphones and speakers.
How can I turn the speakers off and just listen through the headphones?
