I've got a YDL box (Y2K model Mac G4/400) running a server off a
cable modem. The server isn't under much load but it seems to be
clogging up somehow and causing extremely long response times.

If I ping other machines (our ISP's DNS server for instance) from the
YDL machine, ping times average 2000-3000 ms. There also seems to be
a spillover effect that slows down other machines on our network
until the whole network is almost unusable. When the server is
disconnected, things quickly revert to normal.

I'm still more-or-less of a newbie so this has me stumped. Where
should I be looking? I'll provide more information about my
configuration as needed.

A network geek friend thought the machine might be running in
promiscuous mode...
