And you have no problems ripping under Mac OS? Is this the stock Apple cdrom
drive? I can think of no reasons that would happen.

Do you or do you not have the xmms-cdread package installed? Assuming you do
(because it's not going to work at all if you don't):
In xmms, go to the preferences. In the Input Plugins list, click "AudioCD
Reader". Make sure the "enable plugin" box is checked. Click "Configure", and
on the last tab select "Read Digital CD Audio".

Then add /dev/cdrom to your playlist and you should be all set.
