NFS works for me as well. Perhaps the linux 2.4.17/ppc has broken NFS?
There were issues with nfs+ext3+RAID+2.4 that that went away with 2.4.16

What else do the logs tell you (on both the client and the server?) Are
you sure you client side moust command is trying to mount the old server
with read/write, and not just read-only?
