For the second question:
You want to make changes to the yaboot.conf file in
/etc and then use /usr/sbin/ybin to update the bootloader.
That should preserve all your changes to yaboot.conf.
Getting it to not mess up the settings in the first place would be
the better option. I don't use MOL so sorry, can't help there.
