Purchased YDL at Macworld expo, brought home, installed on
7600 w/Sonnet G3 card (128MB RAM, apple 1705 monitor).

Installation appeared to go correctly, but I made two (in retrospect)
questionable choices:

-- opted for text startup instead of graphical. Not a big deal as
I know basic *nix commands, but would just as lief go directly
into the GUI environment -- can this choice be changed w/o reinstalling?

-- configured X for 24-bit color not 16-bit as recommended. The system
has enough VRAM for this, at least the Mac Monitors control panel has
no problem setting "millions" at the chosen 1024x768 resolution. But...

Linux boots up; I log in as a user & do a few ls & man commands to
prove I remember how, then invoke startx and...
  ...the screen blanks
  ...some disk activity ensues
>>the monitor status light changes from green to amber,
   indicating loss of sync <<
...more disk activity gradually fades out to silence

and that's it until ctl-alt-del is hit. (1) what's going on, and
(2) is there a way to break back to the command line without c-a-d
which entails a lengthy fsck?

Thanks for the enlightenment,
  Dave Cortesi
