Subject: shutdown cmd? Help...

Hello All, Please tell me how to shutdown correctly or reboot. I have
logged out of Kde, drop to the cmd line, su to root, type 'shutdown
-h now' or instead of -h, -r, and am given the response cmd not
found. What am i doing wrong? shutdown space -h space now, what is
wrong here. All I want to do is shutdown or reboot properly so I can
go to OS X, or back to Kde. Any help is greatly appreciated
