bizarre trouble on mac side

OK...I'm still playing with my new installation, working on getting
sound working, etc., but in the meantime I've noticed a strange
problem on the mac side which I think is related:

Primary symptom: This started when I installed YDL. I start up
Microsoft (I know, I know, I had to buy it...) Word and after loading
most of the way, it gives me the watch icon ("thinking") for a little
while, right before it finished. When it's done, the mouse pointer,
rather than being solid black as usual, is just an outline, and the
rest is transparent. Moreover, it doesn't work--I get an error beep
if I try to click to move the cursor to a certain place in the text.
This problem only persists in the text window--buttons and the like
work fine. My suspicion--not yet thoroughly tested--is that this
happens after and only after I've booted into Linux (via
BootX--extension or app, it doesn't matter).

Secondary symptoms: other programs seem to be having pesky troubles
as well, since first installing Linux. My mp3 player sometimes hangs
when quitting; Civilization II (old school, I know...) seems to have
memory problems and video-artifact problems.

I haven't done a thorough analysis of this yet, but I wanted to ask
if anyone's experienced similar problems or has ideas what might be
going on or how to fix it.
