Sounds like the frame buffer device can't (or doesn't know) about the
fixed rate your monitor can deal with. Either find out how to make the
fbdev used a fixed freq or pick up a cheapo 15" monitor.

Do B&W's even need a head? You might be able to redirect the console to a
serial port, if the B&W has one.. i know it has ADB 'cause I have one in
the lab with an Ultimatte dongle attached, but I can't remember if it has
serial pots..
