Finally found something that works for me.

First I ran Xconfigurator: ATY Mach64 automatically detected. Selected
Apple PowerBook G3 Series (1999-2000) from the list of monitors. Selected
1024x768 resolution. Selected 24 bit depth. Selected text login. (I use
`startx`).

THEN edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4: change Driver from "fbdev" to "ati".
Change HorizSync to 15-94, VertRefresh to 30-117.

Done.

Hope it works for you too. (I did recompile my kernel to get PCMCIA
support so I haven't tried this with the stock YDL 2.1 kernel.)
