I've never tried using the CD for installation because I don't have one, so
I can't give you any suggestions for making that work.

It might still be possible to do the installation off of your hard drive
without wiping it first. The partitions the installation must set up are
the root, usr, and swap partitions. You can initialize the home partition
after you get Linux running. Assuming you were intending to have a large
home partition, you could use that space temporarily to store the YellowDog
folder on an HFS partition and perform the installation without setting up
the /home partition. Once you get Linux running, you can use pdisk to
delete the temporary HFS partition, allocate that space to the new home
partition, run mke2fs to initialize it, and add the proper entry to
/etc/fstab so it gets mounted at boot time.

To do this, you have to be able to create the temporary HFS partition
without reinitializing your disk. Apple's Disk Setup won't let you do that,
but other formatting software may. Or if you can somehow get to the
partitioning step in the installation process, you will be able to run pdisk
then and create the temporary HFS partition.
