man init and/or shutdown

init 0 = shut down
init 1 = single user mode
init 3 = "normal" multi-user mode
init 5 = graphical login (xdm, kdm, gdm, etc)
init 6 = reboot
init 9 = ingrain changes to init.d

the shutdown command is more multi-user oriented as it allows for time
delays & broadcast warnings....
