If you set your X server to have multiple sizes (640x480, 800,600,
1024x768 for example) X will give you a virtual desktop at least as big
as the highest valid resolution that it finds during startup. For
instance, if you define resolutions up to 1024x768 you will get a
1024x768 virtual desktop when you switch to 800x600 or 640x480. As far
as I know there is no way to prevent this - I have looked around & tried
- although there may be a solution I am unaware of.
