Subject: Fatal X server error

Out of the blue, when attempting to start X, the server now crashes:
_FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
Fiddling with chkfontpath has not helped.
"unix/:-1" is the fontpath set by XF86Config, but I don't know what this means.
(Would installing XFree86 4.0 solve the problem?)
