Does this happen when you are logged in as root, or just a normal user.
I had the same problem when I setup PPP on my G3, but in my case
everything worked fine if I was logged in as root. In the end I
realized
that when I was in meddling in 'resolv.conf' I left the file unreadable
to anyone but root. Opening up the read permissions on this file solved
the problem.
