Radeon support needs to be in place both in the kernel and in the
XFree86 drivers in order to work. To get kernel support, build a
recent 2.4.x kernel (e.g. from sources under
ftp.linuxppc.org/users/kfukui) and install it while still using your
old card. Assuming it works this way, you can now swap in your radeon
card, and you will see the console boot messages beyond the
"Booting...." page.

Now you should upgrade XFree to XFree86-4.1, following instructions in
lots of places. After you have XF-4.1 installed, then install the
binary ati_drv.o and radeon_drv.o drivers at:

ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/users/ajoshi/radeon

Unzip and place in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers. You still have to
get XFree86-4.1 configured, but a good starting point is the file in
kfukui's directory.

[I've gotten this far myself, and X runs fine with acceleration on the
radeon. Unfortunately, any time it drops out, the display gets all
messed up and the only way to restore it to sanity is to reboot via
remote ssh. Any suggestions about how to cure this would be extremely
welcome!!]
