I don't know the answer to your larger problem. But doesn't the "check
forced" message say the device was not cleanly UNmounted? This is a common
message to see if you didn't halt the system.

Before turning off your computer, type "/sbin/shutdown -h now" at the
command line (from the root account). This makes the system flush its memory
to the disk, and cleanly stop all services it's running.

Check "man shutdown" for other arguments you can give with the command, like
-r for reboot, +10 for "in 10 minutes", etc.
