What kind of system are you trying to install on?

I'm not sure about new world Macs, but old world Macs (basically, the beige
ones) will not boot from the CD. You need to run the BootX installer from
the CD, in MacOS. That will allow you to boot into the Linux installer,
which will create a RAM disk, copy the files it needs from the CD, and boot
into Linux off the RAM disk for installation.
